Dr. Bimbi Fernando is a consultant transplant surgeon and an Associate Professor at University College London. Growing up in North West London as the son of a surgeon and a theatre nurse who immigrated from Sri Lanka, he witnessed the importance of community and hospitality from a young age. He qualified as a doctor in 1990 from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London, and pursued specialist surgical training across the UK, including Cambridge.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fernando has been deeply involved in teaching medical students and training junior doctors. His work in transplantation, witnessing the profound gift of life through organ donation, ignited a deep-seated passion for kindness. This interest intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he worked on the front lines in intensive care and observed the crucial role of compassion amidst crisis.
These experiences led him to explore kindness from scientific, historical, and personal perspectives, culminating in his book, The Forgotten Compass. Dr. Fernando believes kindness is a vital life skill, essential for personal flourishing and building a better world.
Beyond his medical work, Dr. Fernando is embracing new activities, including property investment, as he looks towards a purposeful retirement focused on serving and inspiring others through kindness. He is keen to champion the cause for kindness through his ongoing work.
